Design Wall Monday

WooHoo!!!!  I am getting ready to go to retreat.  Lots of friends, no cooking, no cleaning, and only going to work on my own projects. WHAT MORE COULD A GAL ASK FOR????

I have all of my Dresden Plate blocks ready for applique and I absolutely love it. My friend, Maureen, was here today and thought it was awesome and she usually only likes more traditional projects. So I guess it is going to pass the muster. This project is going on retreat with me.

The other projects that I am taking with me is a diamond string pieced quilt (great mindless sewing), Scrappy Bargello & Blue Ridge Beauty by Bonnie K. Hunter. The WalMart cake carriers are great for organizing all the pieces and fabric for each project. Hopefully this will be enough projects to keep me busy. At the spring retreat, I almost ran out of projects to work on. Couldn't believe this would ever happen, so "YES" it is possible to not have enough along to work on. LOL Have to make sure that never happens again, especially when I am so well supplied with UFO's. (Very, very big grin)

Well, hopefully there will be a lot of progress to show next Monday. Until then, to see what others are doing, hop over to Judy's Patchwork Times: http://www.patchworktimes.com/2012/10/22/design-wall-october-22-2012/

Next week I go on retreat at Bug-Bee Hive. Isn't that a fun name? It is a very nice facility and they feed us. That is  one of the best features because I do not have to do cooking or cleanup. Yaaaaaa!!!!  I also like that we just work on our own projects because I do not need anymore UFO's started. In fact, I plan to work on two of my items on the 2012 UFO list while there. It is amazing how much sewing is done at retreat. I know I am terrible about remembering to take pictures, so I will try very hard to remember to take some.

Design Wall Monday

The last week has been an uneventful sewing week. The first week of every month has a majority of my club meetings and then not a lot is happening for the rest of the month. This month our quilt guild actually meets on the second Thursday, instead of the first Thursday, due to a scheduling conflict at the church. It is nice when the events are spread out over the month.

There was no stash report on Sunday, since there was not change, but I have been working on two quilts. One is actually on my UFO list and one is a new project -- "I just had to do it project!!!"   Very big grin ;>)

The quilt on the left, I designed a couple of years ago and just never finished it. It is called, "Black, White, and Bright." All of the red and black sections are pieced, I still have the white, black and colored nine-patch to finish piecing.

I saw a picture someplace for a dresden plate done with dotted fabrics and I "just had to do one!"  One-third of the plates are pieced and ready to be appliqued onto the backgrounds. I have another one-third of the plates ready to be pieced. The points are a great TV project since they are the most tedious part of doing the plates. I hope to have all of the plates pieced this week and then they can be placed onto their background squares. Since I have a retreat at the end of this month, I plan to do the machine applique at the retreat. Of course, there will be a few other projects taken along. After all, I don't want to run short of things to do!  LOL

Stash Report

Again ---- NO Change

The last few weeks have not had a lot happening in the sewing room. No additions or deletions to the stash.

Used since last report:      0.00 yards
Used year to Date:            76.395 yards
Added since last report:    0.00 yards
Added Year to Date:        58.615 yards
Net Used for 2012:           17.78 yards

Oh well!! I did get the bedroom painted, cleaned, and rearranged. Relatives had come to visit. Finished machine quilting a quilt for my friend Mary. Cut and sent off my swap strips for October. Made a trip to Fargo ND for a quilt show and a "Tables du Jour" luncheon. My daughter, Natalie, decorates two tables each year for the luncheon and it is too much fun to miss.
Natalie with one of her decorated tables

Last Monday was a sewing day with my friend Maureen. She sewed half-square triangles that people have given her and I sewed on these blocks that have been in my UFO pile for a while.

Since Monday, I have had a terrible cold. Even my Zicam did not alleviate the symptoms. When I have a cold I have learned not to sew because I make just too many mistakes and then have to "unsew". Today I finally feel human.

While I have had this cold, I have enjoyed the view out the window at all the wonderful fall colors.

Since not a lot happening to my stash, you will want to jump over to Judy's Patchwork Times and check out how others are doing.

Stash Report

No change to the stash!!!  VBG

It has been another one of those weeks when a lot has not been happening in the sewing arena but it has been a fun week. Haven't enhanced or deducted from the stash.

On Tuesday, bowling started and then after bowling I went to machine embroidery club. After club, my friend, Maureen, and I went over to another friend, Mary,  for coffee and to see her sewing area. I just knew that she would have a very organized area and she does!!  Mary has very little stash and everything else is organized in nice pretty boxes. Her ironing station has a dresser for storage under it. Every thing is nice neat. Too bad a little of that wouldn't rub off on me.  LOL

Mary asked me to quilt a charity quilt and I do have it loaded on the frame and have made several passes but haven't finished quilting it. I am only quilting an all-over design on it.
On Wednesday, I went for my back treatment and physical theraply. Since it is 100 miles round trip for my treatments, it seems like it spoils the whole day. At least I am down to only one trip per week, and my back is getting better.

Friday, my hubby and I decided to do a day road trip to northern Minnesota. Due to road construction, we had to take a back route and I thought it was very nice but hubby always likes the freeway. LOL  Seems like sometimes he just gets to driving and forgets to take the time to smell the roses.

My Hummingbirds are feeding like crazy. I imagine one of these days they will be gone until next year. Think I need to put up another feeder next year.  They are so much fun to watch.

Hop over to Patchwork Times and check out how others are progressing. http://www.patchworktimes.com/2012/09/09/stash-report-week-36-2012/

Design Wall Monday

September is here and it is time to get back into quilting mode. This summer I have not done a lot of sewing of any kind but as the cool fall weather starts to settle in, I get more energetic. The trees are already starting to turn colors and lose their leaves. The Hummingbirds are feeding in a frenzy, so I suppose my little buddies will soon be gone. They are so much fun to watch, especially since they are right outside my sewing room window.
This is the first time I have put something on "Design Wall Monday." I thought I would share since I had so much fun collecting more dots for my "Dotty" Dresden Plate quilt and I have a sample block ready to be appliqued. All of the black and white background squares have been cut and have been assigned their designated locations. I used both dotty and geometric for the background squares.

Most of the 600 blades have been cut. Thought I would wait until the majority of the blocks are done before cutting the last 30 blades, that way I will be able to see what fabrics need to be added. I think I will wait to start machine appliqueing these down, as they may move around onto different background squares.

Most of the stack of dotty fabrics were in my stash, other than the ones I reported in my stash report. All of the black and white fabrics were from my stash but it doesn't seem like I made a dent even though I will be using over five yards.

This is what the leftover stack of dotty fabrics still looks like. These are only the ones that I used, not the ones that I didn't use!!  ;>)  Have to admit that after working for eight years in a very large quilt shop, my stash grew a lot in that time. My fabric 401K is quite extensive.  (Very large Grin!!!)

This week all will power flew out the window. I did a very nice job of "Stash Enhancement." Honestly ---- I only went into the quilt shops looking for a few dot fabrics with light background for a "dotty" dresden plate quilt on black and white prints that I plan to make. I was only going to get a couple of FQ's. Well, at the first shop I only found these:
Since I was not completely happy with the four FQ's I found, I then proceeded onto the next quilt shop. Wow, they had a lot of wonderful dot fabrics with light background and I just couldn't resist them. I did put some back. Aren't the following fun??? Notice I did break down and buy several that did not fit the criteria of light background.
This little fat eight just looked so cute and lonely I had to buy that as well.
The amount of fabric that is needed for all the blades of the dresden plates is approximately five yards. Notice - I bought 4 5/8th yards. I do not even want to mention how many dot fabrics I already had. Once I started going through my overly generous supply of fabrics, it was amazing how many dot fabrics were already part of the stash. The stack is quite tall.  :>)   How many quilts can I make using dot fabrics?? Ideas!!

I do have a quilt loaded on the frame for machine quilting, but since it is a charity quilt that I am quilting for a friend, I do not get any credit for fabric used or donated.

Stash Report, B-Day Party & Retreat

Used since last report:                   0.00  yards

Added since last report:                 2.875 yards

It has been a month since my last report. My-O-My, where has time gone? This summer has flown by so fast.

I signed up for a washed strip swap of reds on Quiltville swaps and of course I had to add some fabrics just to make a nice assortment. They were on sale, so I feel completely justified. LOL

While I was waiting for these lovely fabrics to be cut, I spotted some cute fat-eights. My will power faded and I bought these cute ones!!!! They even had them folded so enticingly.
When I wasn't buying fabric, we had some family events over the last couple of weeks. My Mother-in-Law celebrated her 100th Birthday. She looks pretty good for being 100 years young. Sixteen of the family members from Alaska came down for her birthday, as well as, some from California, Missouri, Arizona, and Utah. This picture is of my family. We were missing four of the grandchildren.
From left to right: Brenda (my youngest daughter), Wayne (my hubby), Me, Byron (my oldest child), Hannah (Byron's daughter), Natalie (middle child), and Norman (Natalie's hubby). In the front is my Mother-in-Law, Pearl.

This last week, four friends and I were on a retreat. We had a lot of fun and it is always a good time to get some projects done.

Darlene finished this cute little barn quilt top. There were a few unkind words used while she was sewing it. LOL  The directions were horrible but she managed to get it done. Doesn't she have the cutest smile?

I worked on some calendar table runners. This watermelon one is all ready to be stitched around. A runner for January has been started also and most of the appliques have been cut out. Retreat was a good time to do tedious tracing and cutting of appliques because we talked, ate, sewed, talked, and ate some more.

My friend Maureen came to my house last Monday and we sewed cup cozies. So I have another one done. They are so much fun to make. Maureen hadn't sewed one before. After she found out how easy they are to make, she plans to make more as gifts.
For the last three weeks I have been going to the Chiropractor and having adjustments, as well as, physical therapy three times a week. This has sure cut into my time. It is 100 miles round trip for each one of these treatments. "Yuck"  After another week, then I only go twice a week.  Part of the issue with all this traveling is that I have an opportunity to stop at quilt shops. There are two of them in Brainerd, MN.  Of course my excuse for stopping was for a book called "Stupendous Stitching" by Carol Ann Waugh that I wanted. I spotted one piece of "bargain" fabric that was just too pretty to pass up. They had just put it out in the bargain area about half an hour before I stopped in. But I only bought 3/4 yard!!!! I think I have been fairly good this year and I must need to reward myself a little. LOL

Actually, part of my "reasoning" for purchasing this was, I discovered a "hole" in my color pallette. I was considering doing a fabric swap of pinks until I checked my stash. I have hardly any pink unless it is in the fushia or hot pink category. We can't let that continue, can we??

Yippeeeeee!!!!  The quilt for grandson Jake is done. The pattern is one of Bonnie Hunter's called "Strip Twist."  Last week I could not present Jake with the quilt because the stitching was not what it should be on the back of the quilt for a couple of the borders.  I spent a day ripping out all the stitching on the borders since I decided to change threads. It was a fun quilt to piece but it was hard to machine quilt because it is a busy quilt and couldn't always see where/what I was stitching. (A least that is my excuse and I am sticking to it.) Quilted just a simple allover design in the center of the quilt and E's & L's for the outer borders.

My guys, hubby and son, are holding up the quilt so I could take a picture. They need just a little more training (LOL) on how to hold the quilt for photographing. (They really were very accomodating, so there is hope for them yet!!)

Looks like I won't be able to link to Judy's website, http://www.patchworktimes.com/, but check it out anyway in the event we are able to link up during the week.

I am so bummed. Worked away quilting Jake's graduation quilt this last week so I could present it to him yesterday. All was going well on Friday. I changed thread on top for doing the border and the first border was progressing nicely with no issues. Continued quilting the other borders and "Yaahoo", thought I was done. Whipped that quilt off the frame and then took a good look at the last border. OMG -  all sorts of awful stitching on the back and it all needs to be ripped out. What that meant is that I could only show Jake his quilt yesterday and then be a "take it back Susie" and take the quilt back home. So I will be ripping stitches out today. Don't know when we will either get to Fargo, ND, next or my daughter will be home, so that I can send the quilt back to Jake. Oh, RATS!!!!! Procrastination sure can get me into trouble.
I love the term "stash enhancement" that another blog member coined for the additions we make to our stash. In justification for my "enhancements," 5 1/2 yards were for the back of Jake's quilt. I also purchased 3/4 yard for the binding, so that means I only splurged on 1 1/2 yards that will go to increasing the stash. Oh well, I am still in the black.

We were in Fargo for July birthdays on Saturday. My daughter, Natalie (middle child), turned 40!!  Her husband, Norm, has his birthday this month and Jake will be 19 at the end of the month. Since Natalie and Norm just moved into a different house and have a lot of projects/painting they want to get done, we gave them gift cards and cash. Natalie did get one of the cup cozies that I showed a couple of weeks ago. It was a fun day visiting because all of our children were at Natalie's yesterday.

Stash Report

Used this Week:                               0.50 yards
Used year to Date:                         64.27 yards
Added in the last two Weeks:        3.16 yards
Added Year to Date:                       42.615 yards
Net Used for 2012:                           21.655 yards

Where is the summer going? It is hard to believe that the 4th of July is only a couple of days away. Don't know what all I have been doing but seems like it has been busy. My son bought a place about 15 miles from us and is in the process of moving, so I have been cleaning his new place. Also attended a grad party for grandson up in Fargo, ND.

My heart goes out to all the people in the fire zones and everyone suffering from the extreme heat. I am thankful every day for our good fortune.

On June 14th I attended the Minnesota Quilt Show held in the convention center in Rochester.  It was a bus trip and it was wonderful to leave the driving to someone else. The show put on by MN Quilters is always nice show. There were several exhibits that were especially enjoyable. A group of cow quilts done by Mary Lou Weidman or inspired by the Mary Lou Weidman book "Out of the Box with easy blocks" was hilarious (check out the website for a cow quilt http://marylouquiltdesigns.com/). Another exhibit that was interesting was inspired by 365 days of aerial photos of earth. W

WooHoo!!! I only bought one pattern, one small kit (it was just tooooo cute), and a cone of thread for machine quilting at the MN show. The kit is going to be a little wall hanging for my youngest daughter. I am always telling her that she will "kiss a lot of toads before she finds a frog" and I thought this kit "Spell Gone Bad" was just too much fun.
On June 23rd I attended a quilt show by Pinetree Patchworkers in Brainerd, MN. It was a lot of fun because there were so many people who attended that I knew. It is always fun when we get to visit with people not seen very often. The quilt show was small but fun and is held every other year. In the vendor area, the crystal booth was there and of course I just had to buy some crystals and a snow globe pattern.
After leaving the show, the local quilt shops were the next destination and I did break down and buy some fabric. Guess I didn't slap my fingers hard enough but some of the fabric is going into a grandson's graduation quilt. Is that justification for buying fabric or what??? Below is some of the fabric I bought, but I have already made a cup cozy from some of it. There are plans to make more of these.
Currently I am working on a quilt for my grandson's graduation and will have some significant yardage to report. The pattern is a free one from Bonnie K. Hunter called "Strip Twist." Someone had a picture of one done with black/white fabrics and brights and I thought it would be the perfect quilt for Jake. I think I need to make it larger before adding borders. Still need to do some rearranging but it is getting there.

On Thursday, May 31st, I went up to Fargo to help my daughter and her husband move. I did not do a lot of the actual moving but did help to wipe cabinets and closets down, so they could put kitchen things and clothes away. On Saturday morning (June 2nd) I just had to take a picture of Chipper in his new home watching breakfast being made. Of course, he was hoping something would fall on the floor. (Some of you may remember "Sad Dog" from January - that would be Chipper). My daughter is doing the cooking and I am positive she will adore this picture!!  LOL
On my way home from Fargo I just could not resist stopping at one of my favorite quilt shops on the way home from Fargo last weekend. Found some pieces I just could not do without.  Of Course the bottom two pieces are Halloween and were on sale. Who can resist SALE?
I will probably use some of the black and white prints in my grandson's graduation quilt. Does that sound like justification or what?? I probably have enough black and white prints to make quite a number of quilts.

Now I just need to finish sewing and then quilting some of the projects so that the number used increases.

2012 Stash Report

Used this Week:                        1.83 yards
Used year to Date:                  63.77 yards
Added this Week:                     0.50 yards
Added Year to Date:                35.955 yards
Net Used for 2012:                    27.815 yards

It is amazing how fast Sunday rolls around again and it is time for the stash report. No big completions for the week. I did get a pair of pillowcases for grandson's graduation done this week. Since he played soccer, I had found black and white soccer fabric. He especially likes the color orange, so thought the orange cuff was very appropriate.
My additions for the week were a couple of FQ's that I bought for a $1.50 each. Just too good a deal to pass up. The Halloween fabric is cute and, of course, I always like Laurel Burch fabrics. Do I know what I am going to use them for ---- No!  You know how we always get asked that question.
This week on Wednesday I met with my Longarm Quilting friends. There was so much good show and tell and "I FORGOT TO TAKE PICTURES".  Mary Beth had a piece of "Stupendous Stitching" done from Carol Ann Waugh's "Stupendous Stitching" show that posted on The Quilt Show on Monday, May 21. Is she speedy or what?  It was my turn to hostess the meeting, so we met in the courtyard of Gruber's Quilt Shop.  That meant I went into a quilt shop and I bought fabric---  TeeHee!!!   Three extra ladies joined us for the meeting. Darlene just got a new Innova quilting machine at Christmas and is excited to learn as much as she can about quilting on it. We all talked so much, we were late for lunch. Off to Olive Garden we went. Great food.

All in all it was a fun day!!

Stash Report - Week 21

Didn't report "stash in" last weekend, because I was too busy visiting with my daughters who were home for Girl's Weekend.  We had a great time and, of course, we had to visit the quilt shop while we were having fun. So here goes:

Used this Week:                   0.00  yards
Used year to Date:           61.94 yards
Added this Week:                3.08 yards
Added Year to Date:           35.455 yards
Net Used for 2012:              26.485 yards

I added the black/white fabrics in the first picture and the orange fabrics in the second picture for my Grandson's graduation quilt. The fabrics in the bottom picture were "just because." LOL

For Jacob's granduation quilt, I am planning on making Bonnie Hunter's "Strip Twist" pattern. Other bright colors besides orange will be used with the black/white fabrics. He likes orange, so I do plan to use plenty of orange.

Check out the stash report at Patchwork Times http://www.patchworktimes.com/ to see what others are doing.

Girl's Weekend

Just a little late on reporting about Girl's Weekend. My two daughters and I try to plan one weekend a year to get together and have a fun time.
Brenda (youngest), Beth, Natalie (middle child)
(You can see that the girls take after the tall Norwegian side of the family)

Both Natalie and Brenda arrived on Thursday evening (May 9th) and went with their Dad to Cribbage Tournament. (We couldn't leave him out of the weekend completely). On Friday, there was a shop hop of Antique Shops and Boutique's. We found several really neat items at some of the shops. For one of my friends who is completely crazy about dragonflies, I found a garden decoration of silverware knives made into a dragonfly. Haven't decided if I can wait until her birthday, which is in December, or give it to her now to enjoy. I vote now!!!

I also bought a hanging basket and a bunch of potted geraniums for my pots on the front porch and a turntable. I painted the turntable orange and have put a three tier holder on it and put it by my sewing machine. It is sure nice to be able to rotate the the holder with my threads in it.

My daughter, Natalie, bought the neatest lamp for the new house they will be moving into at the end of this month. The lamp used an antique camera tripod for the base and had a thin rawhide lampshade. We had lunch at a nice little bakery/cafe in Cambridge, MN, to gain strength for the rest of our browsing/shopping. All in all, it was a great outing day with the girls.

On Saturday, we attended a craft show in Brainerd, MN. There were only a couple of booths that had some very nice items. One booth had the nicest woven rugs with some of the most unique materials woven in. I bought two small ones for our bathroom which I plan to paint this year. Then we went to Country Fabrics Quilt Shop. Guess what ---- I BOUGHT FABRIC!!! I had been doing so well at not buying fabric, but they had some nice orange fabrics and black/white fabrics which I will use in my grandson's graduation quilt.
Natalie and Brenda in front of Country Fabrics

After all of our hard shopping, we had lunch at Christmas Point. Delicious!! We finished out the afternoon, browsing at Christmas Point. Loved some of the items but way out of my budget. We went home to have steak on the grill with the guys (hubby and son, Byron).

Sunday we had a late breakfast of french toast and sausage. The girls then headed home. It is always great to spend time with the family. It was a great weekend.

Hummingbirds are back

The Hummingbirds are finally back!!! I look forward every spring to the Hummingbirds coming back. Since the feeder hangs just outside my sewing room windows, I can watch them come and go. This year I actually had the feeder out on time. Some years they are looking for the feeder before I get it out. Not sure how many Hummingbirds there are but it must be quite a few. I took this picture through the window this evening.
I would love to be a better photographer so that I could take better pictures of them. They are so much fun to watch. There is always one or two that try to chase the rest of the Hummingbirds away. When I have the windows open, it is amazing how noisy they. When all the flowers start blooming, they do not come to the feeder quite as often but in the Spring and Fall they feed quite heavy. Let the fun begin!!
Beth

Girls Weekend

I am getting so excited. Every year my two daughters (Natalie & Brenda) and I plan a weekend of getting together and having fun. This years weekend starts Thursday evening, May10th. The girls should arrive home sometime Thursday evening. On one of the days, there is a shop hop of Antique/Boutique shops. Should be fun (and I will try not to buy anything --- LOL).  Also, I have some coupons for a couple of fun places to eat during the hop. There is a craft show for Saturday. No set plans but the weather for Saturday sounds beautiful.
On the left is Brenda and Natalie is on the right.

The above picture of the girls was taken in Scotland 2 1/2 years ago.  I had always wanted to go to Scotland (don't ask me why, because I don't know) and the girls both decided to go with me. It was a great trip. I loved the country. We also spent a day and two evenings in London before flying home. Great sights.

I realized that I need to get some updated pictures of the girls together. Brenda is the youngest, Natalie is the middle child, and my son, Byron, is the oldest.  Natalie is going to be 40 this year!!!  Boy --- am I starting to feel old. LOL

Since I have had to do some house cleaning this week, not a lot going on in the sewing room. Guess the stash report is going to be "zero."

2012 Stash Report

Used this Week:                17.25  yards
Used year to Date:          61.94 yards
Added this Week:               0.00 yards
Added Year to Date:          32.375 yards
Net Used for 2012:             29.565 yards

It is amazing that a person is able to use 15 yards of fabric out of the stash and it makes absolutely no dent!!!! I finished 14 pillowcases for a service project in our guild and used 15 yards of fabric that had originally been planned for a quilt. Since I knew that the quilt was never going to be made (not the style of fabric I normally buy), it was time to make something else and get it out of the stash. Bet no one else ever has that issue. LOL  Do you wonder -- What was I thinking when I bought that fabric??

Also donated 2.25 yards to Goodwill.

How many years before I actually see a reduction in stash??  Course the house is well insulated with all that fabric!! I am doing my part to keep heating/cooling expenses down.  Grin, grin!!

Visit Patchwork Times by Judy Laquidara to see how others are doing with their stash reporting.

Quiet in the Sewing Room

Well, not much to report in the sewing room. This last week I did cut and prepare fabric kits for 14 pillowcases for the women's shelter. There is going to be a sewing day at the public library on Monday and I plan to sew the pillowcases. WooHoo ---- That will let me be able to report some stash reduction.

This weekend was bowling tournament. Can I say that it was not pretty????!!!!!  We had to bowl at 8:00 am on Saturday and that was altogether too early for me. I am NOT a morning person!!!!! LOL When we bowled doubles it sure was nothing to brag about.  Not one of our team did all that well.  I did manage to bowl half way decent for the singles event.

On Sunday, we bowled our team event and again it was nothing to brag about but we always have fun.

Can't say the green shirts were the most attractive color we have ever worn, but we always buy a tournament shirt to wear for some of the events. Course, there had been a little bit of party time on Saturday evening.
